In Wilmington, garden centers are busiest on spring weekends, when new stock arrives and popular plants sell out; weekday mornings are calmer and staff have more time to answer questions. Ask which plants are hardy for your USDA zone in North Carolina, whether trees and shrubs carry a replacement guarantee (one year is common), and whether the nursery delivers and plants large items. Fall is the best planting season for many trees and perennials, and end-of-season sales are common. Many nurseries close or shorten hours in winter, so check the listing for current hours and Google rating before you go.

No hours are on file. If you plan a visit, phone first or check the Google Maps link on this page for the latest times. You can reach Nakatomi Gardens at (910) 520-2609; calling is usually the quickest way to ask about availability, prices or directions.

Today I met Tawny while visiting Nakatomi Gardens, the entire experience was delightful. Not only did they have what I was hoping for, but so much more. The quality and variety are amazing! Tawny seriously knows her stuff, she was incredibly helpful and she was also really great to talk to, she has an obvious love for these beautiful ladies. I will definitely be returning for another gorgeous Japanese Maple!

Duncan at Nakatomi Gardens has been incredibly helpful with selecting the right trees for different locations and needs around my property. He’s knowledgeable, thoughtful, and takes the time to recommend plants that will actually work well long term. Great experience and excellent customer service.

We bought four different varieties of Japanese Maples from Nakatomi Gardens today while they are here in Raleigh. The staff was very friendly. Duncan was very knowledgeable. He answered all of the questions we had and it was evident that he loves what he does. There was an incredible selection and they were very organized. Information about the specific types were printed on a laminated sheet along with a photo of the mature tree. Care instructions are also given to you upon purchase. Very helpful. We got there at 9 am at the start of their 3 day sale here, and we were surprised by how many other people had the same plan. If they’re traveling to sell in your area, get there early! Definitely recommend!

We had such a great experience shopping for our first ever Japanese maple trees in March of 2024, I just reached out to Nakatomi again for some help pruning and was once again humbled by their kindness and willingness to help! We love our 3 little trees and are considering buying a fourth for our patio this year... wouldn't shop anywhere else, these guys know their stuff!!! First and second pictures are March 31, 2024 and last picture is March 31, 2025.. Just woken up after winter, can't wait to see how gorgeous she (especially) gets thru fall as it's right outside our bedroom window.
